Every August. Check the festivals' own websites for this year's dates and programmes.
What to expect
In August Edinburgh becomes the world's biggest arts festival. Fringe venues are spread across the city, but the busiest parts are the Royal Mile, the university area around Bristo Square and George Street in the New Town, with the International Festival at the Usher Hall, the Lyceum and other big halls, and the Tattoo on the castle esplanade.
Rooms go quickly and prices are at their highest, so book as early as you can. Staying a short walk or tram ride from the centre means you can see a late show and still get back easily.
